The Handburger @ City Hall

Nope. That not me. I'm the ugliest duckling that hides behind the camera.

Its been the longest time since I've heard lots of good comments and recommendations, yet surprisingly not many food blogs have done reviews on this place. After finding much needed time and star alignments, I finally did the plunge and had the opportunity to review this place. Just a bit background information on The Handburger. Did you know that they are established by the same management as the Soup Spoon. Well. Now you do.

Intriguing Menu

Interesting play for they menu design. The clipboard reminds me of the waitress taking your orders in road dinners in America which the whole burger industry is born from. Now gone are the routes and up with the shopping malls, but its subtle touches like this that remind us of the root which we origin.

I bet you can't say no to these.

Beer Battered Calamari

The Beer Battered Calamari was huge and were piping hot went they arrived on the table. Each ring is cover with a chunky crust, which is crisp and not oily. Upon biting into the ring reviews a tender and not too elastic squid. There are also a variety of dipping sauces condiments that are paired with the calamari for your choice. Unfortunately, you can only choose one of of the whole array of assorted flavors which makes it rather disappointing. I went with the Garlic Aioli which is surprising better than the normal mayo or Tatar sauce that is commonly served. Its slightly similar to mayo, but with a bit spicy and garlic tangy in it. I couldn't stop dipping into it. Make sure that you eat these hot to truly enjoy them at their highest potential.

Pulled Pork Burger

When one think of burgers, the instead though is patties. The Pulled Pork Burger as the name suggests is shredded pork which is pulled from the bone, which the tender pork flesh is slowly cook to a tender. Each mouthful is a juicy meat is drowsed with homemade barbecue sauce that engulfs all senses. The slaw on top seems to be a mix of onions and skinless tomatoes which has a sweet and tangy vinegar slight sour, compliments the heavy and robust barbecue sauce. Striking a balance between sweet and savory. All these sits on a bed of coral lettuce, tomato and toasted rustic bun. Just make sure to pick your teeth later with all those gummy strings of pork stuck between your teeth.

Tandoor Chicken Burger

Have craving for Indian food or satay. Not to worry. Handburger has many burgers to satisfy anyone with any craving. As one would come to expect this burger would take many traits from what its name suggest, tandoori chicken. The chicken is fragrant and well seasoned, a little less spicy that what I expected. The thigh meat was marinated in yogurt cucumber, red onions, hand cooked masala sauce and mint mayo. Sits on a sweet mango chutney, coral lettuce, tomato and toasted spinach and parmesan bun.

Duck Leg Confit Burger

The French come to detest what of which is American food, the burger. Thus you don't see the presents of it in french cuisines. Asking for it would invite stares and a slap across the face. Interesting the people in Handburger beg to differ from tradition and includes this fusion burger into their menu. This is also one of the more raved burgers in Handburger.

No wonder praises of this are sang. The duck is tender and moist. The meat simply flakes off when cut into, shows a slight pretty pink. No pungent duck smell could be detected. Instead the pairing of the mandarin oranges bring this dish is a even new high. The impossible natural sweet of the thin wedges of oranges preach on the boneless duck leg confit makes prefect bliss that words can describe. The mix of baby snow pea sprouts and coral lettuce add texture and the much welcome of green. All sits on a toasted caramelized onion bun. Only difference between this and the original duck leg confit is that the skin here is limpy instead of the crispy texture that one would expect. Though this is a small trade off of a wonderful gastronomic burger. If there are 5 stars I would give a 7. Highly recommended.

I noticed that different burger buns are selected based on the respective ingredients that goes into making the burger. Shows that intricate planning and careful consideration was really taken to bring out the best of each burger. Not some random cash cow industry that churns out money.

All burgers comes served with a choice of either Straight Cut Fries or Chilled Stuffed Tomato for the sides.

Straight Cut Fries

The fries here are deep fried still with the skin attached. Its crisp in the outside and fluffy in the inside. Love the extra texture that the skin brings about compare the normal fries that we are accustom to get. The default dipping sauce is barbecue sauce, unless you request accordingly.

Chilled Stuffed Tomato

Bursting with natural goodness.

This is a rather unique dish. A chilled peeled skinless tomato is stuffed to the brim with coleslaw of purple lettuce, carrots and onions. The coleslaw has a minute nature sweetness and seems to be toss with a slightly sweet and mild vinegar. A splash of special carrot and sesame sauce to add for dressing. This dish is extremely unique and at the same time health, a must try for the health conscious. Taste wise it may not appeal to everyone, but I urge you to give it a try.

Lemonade Mint

This is basically crushed iced lemonade with mint. The mint does add a refreshing touch to the drink. However, I find it a bit too sour. If the drink were to be slightly sweet that would be the better.

Lychee Mint

The sweet fragrances of the lychee and the refreshing cool mint together with crush ice makes this a real winner drink. This two ingredient do not overpower one another, one can taste both lychee and mint distinctively. Really nice drink to wash down those greasy burgers. Makes all my friends jealous for now ordering this.

The environment is brightly lit and compact seating. Thus sitting can troubling if you were to go in large groups. The tables reminds me of the canteen and school diners that we have in your childhood days. Service wise the staff are usually young waiters and some are a bit slower to react, but do not let this falter the great kitchen staff that prepares your food. Due to the small kitchen, you may not to wait a while (depending on the crowd) for your meal to arrive. However, trust me its worth it.

Handburger dares to be difference and innovative, greatly differentiating the man from the boys. Breaking every rule that there is to making a burger and yet succeeding in across that thin line between gastronomic explosion and total disaster. It is not art here that we see, but a stroke of genius that makes creatively melts all the flavors together in present harmony. Proofing that there is more to it, then just plain hamburger.

Thicken me up Scotty

Carl's Jr is one of the very few fast food chains in Singapore in which I deem worth to be consumed. The previous glory of the BIG THREE namely MacDonalds, KFC and Burger King have long lost their spark and shine. Some like A&W even cease to exist anymore. However, fret not. As new competition have step up to satisfy what has been lost in the years of dominance of the evil empires. We see Carl's Jr, Popeyes Chicken & Biscuit and the soon to arriving Wendy's.

Carl's Jr introduced its Thickburger in Singapore early this year with the un-presidential help of Edison Chen. The new Thickburger boast of using a half pound of 100% Angus Beef for its patty accompanied by two slices of American cheese, pickles, tomatoes, red onions and crisp lettuce; topped with mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard on top of a sesame seed bun. Comes in a box instead of the regular paper wrap.

Though the visual impression isn't at its best.
Trust me on taste wise.

I must give it to Carl's Jr. They have sure winner in this. The Angus Patty is totally different compared to the regular patty that you would get. It is more succulent and juicy and there is a natural sweetness from the ground meat. The mustard and mayonnaise compliments it in perfect harmony, as the greasy juices overwhelms your mouth.

For those who don't consume beef. Carl's Jr also have a variety of Chicken Sandwiches.
Charbroiled Sante Fe Chicken (above)

Fries with potato skin intact.

Compared to the first time I ate in their maiden opening in Marina Square, Carl's has finally change their fries to that with the skin still intact. Some may see as the skin being unclean and expose to pesticides. I beg to differ. Potato skin in fact contains more nutrients than its starchy internal. On top of that, it adds extra texture and taste to the boring starch.

Not to rest on its laurels. Just about a month ago, Carl's Jr introduced the newly Western Bacon Thickburger. For those western bacon burger fans, this is a god send with the best of the two burgers in one. One would think that with the arrival of the Thickburger, this would eliminate the purpose of anyone doubling their burger patties. So....Wrong!

Western Bacon ThickBurger

Double Portobello Mushroom Burger
Two normal patties is roughly equivalent to a single Thickburger Patty.

The impossible. Double Western Bacon Thickburger.
Its so thick that the box can't even close properly.

Comparison between a single and double Thickburger.

My friend is a monster in disguise. Eating a Double Western Bacon Burger together with a Beef Chili Cheese Fries, coming up to $18. The bottomless pit glutton even ate 26 sticks of satay for supper the night before. Insane.

Difference between the normal and western bacon Thickburger. It really depends on you. If you like a more refreshing and crispy crunchy greens, then go with the normal. Else if smoky and greasy goodness is your type of sinful pleasure, then the western bacon.

Beef Chili Cheese Fries sure is messy.

Only item I dislike on Carl's menu is its Beef Chili Cheese Fries. I can't stand the hint of curry power within, taste rather artificial to me. Rather would prefer some hot sauce instead.

Do note that as this outlet is located in the neighborhood, the place can be flooded with kids and students. The sitting is really limited. Stop hogging the seats and studying for your papers. There is a proper place called a "library".

Double Me Up

Now everything is double. Big Macs, Turkey Bacon Swiss, Espresso, etc...you get the point. Ever since Burger King has started the up all you can till you create the Tower of Pisa. MacDonald's has also being following swiftly so as not to be beaten. Similar to the Big Mac, the McGriddles and Sausage Egg McMuffin has also gotten the X2 treatment.

I should seriously stop falling into MacDonald's marketing traps

Taste wise is no to say bad, but usually people want to have a light breakfast and this is definitely not one. The original Sausage Egg McMuffin was great with the egg, sausage patty and cheese going well with each other. This is just too heavy for a breakfast, too greasy and sausage patty overwhelming all the other ingrediates.

Double Double-Cheese Burger

What do you get when you combine two double cheese burgers together. Well you get a "unofficial" quarter cheese burger from MacDonald's. Since a Big Mac already cost $4.25 on the menu and consist of 3 buns (carbohydrates), 2 beef patties (protein) and 1 cheese slice. 1 Double cheese burger instead consist of 2 buns, 2 beef patties and and 2 cheese slices.

Now to the assembly instructions. (This way vary from person and person, but this is my personal preference). Approach the MacDonald's counter and order 2 Double cheese burger. Then instruct the cashier that you want a special order where you combine the burger together. However, you only want the two top and bottom buns, patties and cheese; no pickles, tomato sauce and onions. Don't worry the cashier will be usual and give you the "wtf" face and usually inquire his manager, whom will usually come to you ask the order again and finally give the go ahead. (Funny to see the cashier instruct the manger who in turn confirm the order, then to go to the kitchen and repeat the order to the assembler. Yes. "Cooks" in MacDonald's are seen as assemblers in my eyes, since they only stacker orders, instead of really cooking. Lol!)

So the construction will be from bottom to top. Bottom bun, cheese slice (no. 1), beef patty (no. 1), cheese slice (no. 2), beef patty (no. 2), cheese slice (no. 3), beef patty (no. 3), cheese slice (no. 4), beef patty (no. 4) and finally the top bun.

Now. For the main star...

Definitely Grease Bomb (Stretchy Cheese)

Fountain of Cheese

Doctor our patient is bleeding to death

My NTU hostel and workplace

Explosives to health destruction

Even distribution of cheese and beef

What! Its over...*sad*

Firstly. Yes! Quarter cheese burger is very filling so be prepared to be filled. So comparing with the Big Mac, double the number of patties, 4 times the number of cheese slices and since I only ate the same number of buns (Didn't overload carbohydrates). Cost wise its better then ordering a Big Mac. Yes. Its definitely more fats, due to the additional cheese and patties, but I'm comparing it from a cost point of view. In addition, you don't eat MacDonald's more than once a fortnight. Do you? (In case any of you are going to complain that Big Mac is healthier due to the lettuce in it. Come on. That miserable amount of wrinkled lettuce, go eat some proper greens.)

Macau Munch @ Senghuat Eating House

Read this base on "makan" zone from hardwarezone. Apparently base on some reviewers, its really good and authentic pork chop bun like the ones from Macau. I've never been to Macau, but base on the hype on it, I'd decided to check it out.

The store is situated in Senghuat Eating House, which is across the street from Bugis MOS burger. (Its also near the famous duck rice stall) Don't be deceive by its appearances, they have a variety of buns and fried stuff. There is even chicken cheese cutlet, definitely worth checking out another time.

Macau Munch Stall

Ham Ji Peng & Pineapple Bun

Secret in a bag

Look at that greasy bomb

Bleeding cheese

Other then the macau burger, i order the pineapple bun and ham ji peng. The pineapple bun is just like your average normal bun, sliced in half and spreaded with butter. Nothing absolutely good about it. Its just slightly fragrant. The ham ji peng is the same, at best average. Now for the good stuff.

The macau burger structure from bottom up is burger base patty, cheese, lettuce, pork chop, chilli sauce, mayo sauce and top burger patty. As you can see the burger is a grease bomb. The patties are thinly sliced and packed together to form a patty with a good teriyaki sauce coats it all around perfectly. Upon sinking your teeth in it, the burger bleeds cheese, chill and mayo. Yet the sauces compliments the whole burger quite well.
